From the concept design of arch. Antonio Mattia Acito MOSAE designs and builds the redevelopment of an eighteenth-century tuff quarry taking care of the realization of the covered multifunctional space, of the support structures and of the arena, finishing in record time for the inaugural ceremony of Matera European Capital of Culture 2019.
Starting from the arch. Acito’s project, made of lightness and transparency, MOSAE has found a technical solution that respect the concept and allow to define every individual technological solution. The new elements try to impact as little as possible with the place and are ready to be removed when the structure will leave the quarry. These wooden and metal structures are strictly dry-made and easy to assemble, disassemble and re-use.
The main support structures are made entirely of laminated wood, the scheme is composed of six elements completely prefabricated and assembled on site. The terminals of beams and pillars have been made with steel plates and also prefabricated and pre-installed on each element. The elements were connected to each other with bolted joints. The structure is built on a single floor above ground, with the exception of the portion of the small loft floor also made of laminated wood.
The project includes a metal frame supporting the ETFE covering. It consists of 5 pitches, all independent of each other, fixed to the load-bearing structure in laminated wood. The metal frames are composed of rectangular profiles.
The prefabricated modules are made with Xlam wooden structure, extruded expanded polyurethane insulation and covered with corten steel strips.
The space of about 1200 square meters covered and air-conditioned has a capacity up to 700 people, a stage 24×7.5 m, a foyer, spaces for services including locker rooms and warehouses and a space dedicated to catering.
Some temporary and prefabricated elements have been placed for the provision of the expected services: restaurant bar, bicycle rental, toilets, bookshop.
For these elements, it was decided to create real equipped pods, prefabricated and equipped with electrical and air conditioning systems up to the required comfort requirements.
